Folks that ordered the new SSYC shirts and pennants will be happy to learn that they are ordered and should be available in the time that it takes the manufacturer to supply them. No fixed date yet because the supplier does them custom for each order and it’s a specialty item. Just be patient since our Commodore, Bill, has done his part; now it’s up to the supplier. If these new items prove to be a big hit, they may become available in our website store. We base what we sell there on the likelihood that people will want it so stay tuned for future updates.

The annual boater’s party was a big hit this year with a 1960’s theme and lots of great food and beverages. Boaters brought many delicious dishes to past leading to plenty of food and desserts for all. If you went away hungry, that was on you. There was music and dancing and many prizes that were won from the boater’s 50-50 raffle but the high light of the evening’s activities was the costume party. The top spot went to Ed & Nan Turner for their fantastic 60’s themed costumes. Congratulations to Ed & Nan and a big SSYC thanks to Diane Brown and the many helpers for bringing in another successful boater’s party.

Please ensure you tie down your boat in a manner that helps keep it from bumping your neighbor and floating into or over your dock. On May 31^st an estimated 50 boats had to be retied and, in some cases, cut loose to be retied due to our channel’s water level rising over many of our docks. This is not an uncommon occurrence as it has happened many times in years past.

Sunset Shores Yacht Club asks that you take the time to properly secure your boat for the possibility of rising waters. The rising waters left many docks submerged causing many boats to float over the docks. Obviously this can lead to serious damage to both the boat and the dock. The winds pushed several boats into bumping into their neighbor’s. Thank you to the many devoted boaters who volunteered to go around the marina and secure many of the boats in the most serious situations. Here are some tips on a reliable way to secure your boat.

Make sure you have a reasonable amount of line to rise and fall but not too much to sway into your neighbor or float over a submerged dock. Basically, try to keep it centered between the dock and the next boat. Not everything in the illustration is necessary but using your mooring pole and the center pole will help keep you centered. This year’s big experiment is with goose repellant. We all know of the mess these birds make and they never clean up after themselves. We are making a test run with a product called…wait for it… Migrate Goose Repellent.  It will be used in specific areas to discourage the geese from nesting and hanging out there. The product is very similar to pepper spray to the birds but does not bother humans. No harm is done to the geese but the birds may not find Sunset Shores Yacht Club a very comfortable place to hang out.

If this product works as good as it claims, we should be relatively goose free in no time.

Spider spraying was a big hit last season. Because of the success, we’ve decided to extend it out to include the docks. Last season the focus was on the buildings and some experimental usage on test docks. Around mid-season, a test was made to obtain the details regarding what it would take to spray all of the docks. It was decided that because of the spider spraying’s popularity with our boaters, we would indeed spray docks along with our buildings this year. You asked and we listened. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers to help because it’s a big job.

Once we have enough people, a schedule breaking up the docks into sections along with spraying directions will be developed.
